I enjoyed the pieces of back-story of Sam (Samantha) most of all, the sense of her competence now trimmed to fit a suburban housewife life provoked me. I wish that story theme had been developed further, but that may be for the next books in this series.
The story would have benefited from paring down. We start with two characters in a long carefully developed scene but then we leave them behind and must start all over to gain a rapport with the mc, Sam. Clipping this initial chapter drastically would have helped the story’s movement. We slow down again later when Sam’s research into the past results in sections of historical information that could have been greatly condensed, and given in conversation. I was put off by the fact that Sam has thoughts about the mystery that we aren’t allowed to share even though we are in third person close, right in her head, so she should not be having cogent directed thoughts of importance that the author hides from us.
But it’s a sound enjoyable read, light on the violence, with some nice details.

The author did a good job of introducing a few characters who had personalities that I haven't really seen before, and they are all very different from each other. That made the book very interesting to me.
I loved the story line, and the ending sure didn't turn out like I thought it would. It's packed with enough twists and surprises to keep you wanting more. It's a short read, but I felt the length was perfect. I didn't have any thoughts of "wow, just get to the end already". It ended before it got redundant, and that's the kind of book that works for me.
