Set in Gilded Age America, a young woman must choose between circumstance and destiny. Orphaned as small children, Sterling Redmond and her older sister Charlotte are raised by their grandfather at the family’s Maryland country estate of Northampton. Charlotte blossoms into a famed Baltimore beauty, but Sterling is more interested in books and horseback riding than feminine pursuits. Concerned that her niece will never find a suitable husband among the local Baltimore gentry, Madame De Chant whisks Sterling away to Belle Époque Paris in search of a gentleman who can understand her. In their absence, Nicholas Pembroke, the son of an English earl, takes up residence in the manor bordering Northampton. When Sterling and her aunt return to America for Charlotte’s wedding, Sterling finds that her perfect husband is living right next door. But there is a problem: he is already engaged to marry Charlotte.

“Sterling Redmond walked into the room, and Nicholas saw her for the first time. He had not yet met her, but Charlotte had told him this about her: she was dull. Her disposition was too serious. Some called her a bluestocking. In short, she was a problem. A young woman of such a prominent and influential Baltimore family was expected to secure a marriage worthy of her social status. After two seasons in Paris, where her great-aunt Madame De Chant maintained a household, she had yet to win a firm offer of marriage. There was a growing impatience among her closest family members, who wondered if her education and forthright manner prevented any positive momentum in this direction, and to make matters worse, Charlotte complained, the young woman seemed not the slightest bit interested in abandoning her independence. Charlotte painted her sister’s prospects in such a dim light that Nicholas was astonished when the supposedly awkward and plain sister walked into the drawing room, and he saw a creature quite unlike the one described to him. Two years spent in Europe had clearly transformed the younger Miss Redmond into something unrecognizable.”

What a FANTASTIC book!

OMG! This book is FANTASTIC! I wasn't sure if wanted to read this book after seeing the cover and reading the Book Description. It seemed interesting. Since it was FREE, I decided to download it. I am sooooo glad I did! Once I started reading it, I couldn't put it down until I finished it. It was interesting with it's twists and turns. I loved Nicholas and Sterling's story. Charlotte was an 'ithch....... I thoroughly enjoyed this book and I HIGHLY RECOMMEND it! It definately is going on my 'Read Again' list.

Even though it's a style I much prefer in crime and thrillers with differing POV's this time reading it in a romance actually seemed very satisfying
The characters were real in a larger than life way only one negative was the ages or Camille and Andrew were unclear and do they were a little harder to visualise
It was a book that played out much like a movie in my mind and brings to mind a lot of Jane Austen for the descriptive imagery of words which can actually make it seem
as the book is playing out in front of the reader
One negative is that the word 'Years' is much used to demonstrate the timeline whereas the actual length is only 3 it something took a slight jarring note showing a considerable amount of time passed
It may be that the author initially intended it to be a saga encompassing years but cut it short to three to which I am grateful as I don't like very long romances .

At first I didn't think I would be interested since it was set in New England area. But like my momma used to say, try it, you might like it. So I did, and I did! I would have liked a little more on the ending, it was a little to abrupt for me but I can't say I was completely unhappy about it. This story of two sisters of completely different characters, was compelling in the way they each dealt with the death of their parents. The love that each received appears to have been the same but given differently and like so many parents and grandparents, every person receives love in different ways. Sterling, with her outgoing personality, appealed to me most. I consider myself a strong woman, but I don't think I would have stayed around to torture myself over a man that I loved but could not have. But that is what makes a good read!

Enjoyed reading the story and look forward to others by this author as I was unable to put it down! Luckily dinner had been finished and dishwasher on - just finished at nearly midnight. A different slant to the plot with strong characters that evolved made more enjoyable with the settings in Maryland around the time of the end of slavery, Paris in it's own turmoil. England was painted as a place to escape from, mainly due one of the main characters unhappiness there. Telegraphs and paintings by Renoir.

Sterling Redmond captured my full attention from the opening scene in Paris. Sterling may be a historic heroine bound by a woman's duty of the era, but she is a role model for today's woman. Her character unfolds ever so gracefully with each relationship and experience. As a reader, you grow to know her, understand her and root for her. This is a beautifully written love story that will stand the test of time. Make room in your library because you'll want to read it over and over again.
