I got this book for free after seeing it on the Kindle Buffett list. I did not know the author and just thought the concept would interest me. The book was good, and there were very few errors which is also a plus for me. With that said, the subject matter is just heartbreaking and sad.

5th Grader Josh Caldwell is being abused (sexual, mental and physical) by his 26 year old mother's ex-con boyfriend. Josh's Teacher (Ms. Tharp) realizes that something is amiss with him and is doing her best to find out what it is. At the same time, Josh and his friend Stevie (a black boy of similar age who is also being abused) plot to assist one another in killing their abusers. From there things start to unfold quickly and I cannot say more without giving away the plot. At the end of the book you just find yourself wondering why or when will mothers start to tune into, and prioritize their children, so this kind of abuse doesn't continue to exist.

In my early 20's, after an argument with my ex I would always go to the park. The ritual was the same - I would pull out my notebook and start writing out my thoughts in poetry form. I would often stare at the trees and admire its strength... through rain, snow, and storms... it remained standing. Trees were a metaphor for my life. No matter what came my way. I had to keep STANDING! After a good cry, I would laugh to myself and say... "Thank GOD!! These trees can't talk."

REVIEW:

Josh & Stevie are best friends who are both dealing with sexual abuse from their mother's boyfriends. The trees in the woods serve as a safe haven from their troubles. During one of their meetings they devise a plan to kill their mother's boyfriends. How long can the trees keep their secret?

Never the one to avoid subjects that may be taboo to others, Mr. Smith writes about the subject of sexual abuse. I was prepared to trump the author and figure out the ending, but I can honestly say the ending had me speechless.

Growing up as a child, I had the "Grown Man Talk" drilled in my head so many times I can recite it in my sleep. As a parent I give the "Grown Man Talk" to my children including the boys. There are so many mothers who turned a blind eye to the suspicions of sexual abuse, because they fear being alone. If These Trees Could Talk should serve as an eye-opener for all parents.

I highly recommend this book.

An Emotional, Tree-enhanced Journey

I got this book as part of a very generous offer from the author, who provided four of his novels as a gift to his fans at the beginning of the Corona virus quarantines. Had I known it was such an amazing book, I would have purchased it! Josh's journey is one that is so haunting, so painful, that several times as I was reading, I had to put the book down so I could weep for him and for his friend Stevie. The characters are so well written that you feel as if you know them, and I absolutely hated Dutch, the man who gave Josh such a miserable life! I actually cheered when he got his comeuppance!! The ending of the book is a complete surprise, and left me stunned and speechless! From now on, any time I see the name Brian W. Smith on a book cover, I will know it is a book I need to add to my collection!

Josh and Stevie meet up in the woods to get away from their troubles at home They are both being molested by their mother's boyfriends. When Josh couldn't sit on the couch that they set up in the woods because it hurt too much, that really tugged at my heart. How could anyone to that to a child? They had a plan though. These boys may have only been 11, but they were going to make some bold decisions. As far as the moms, I just don't know how they could be so blind!

The way this book is written just really made it come to life. I really got to know Josh and Stevie and how much abuse they were going through. I also unfortunately got to know their mothers and their mothers' boyfriends. These were some real sickos. I was really surprised at the ending! It's amazing what the mind will do when there is so much pain and trauma in a child's life.

Brian W. Smith is one of my favorite authors. He is always coming up with books that have important issues raised. All of his books are easy to read and move along so fast, and this book is no exception. Way to go Brian! I highly recommend this book!
