All this with the backdrop of places like the Florida Keys, making me feel more well travelled than I am.
The title taken from the sound you hear when putting a Conch shell to your ear is clever. It can also be used to describe how bloody things get..
One thing I know for sure, is that I never ever want to be anywhere near a Hagfish.

There is a murder, a fiendishly clever one, at the outset, and there is suspense as private investigator Jake Scarne tries to unravel the financial and criminal skulduggery behind it. His nemesis is Victor Ballantrae, who shares traits of financier Allen Stanford and Australian media mogul Rupert Murdoch, though not even the entire family of his client, the father of the murder victim, is on his side. Scarne's biggest problem is Alana Loeb, Ballantrae's second in command and an alluring woman with a mysterious past.
These are not cardboard characters. De Maria fleshes them out with quirks and flaws and endearing characteristics -- even the two psychopathic hit men employed by Ballantrae. The action flows easily from Manhattan to Miami to Antigua as the author glides smoothly from billionaire magnates to homicide detectives to slick financial manipulators and to bona fide mobsters.
De Maria takes us to a Florida we know from John D. MacDonald and Elmore Leonard, but his Jake Scarne has as much of the hard-bitten Bogie of "The Maltese Falcon" and "The Big Sleep" as he does of the easygoing Travis McGee. Scarne doesn't want to play the sap, either, but the flesh is weak and Alana's allures are often overpowering.
Sound of Blood has many fresh ingredients as well. The author masterfully weaves in financial fraud ripped from the headlines of the past two years. Ballantrae's jack-of-all-trades assassins are a gay couple. There is little room for a happy Hollywood ending as the plot moves with the inexorability of a tragedy toward its climax.
The author savors some things too much. A key golf match between Scarne and Ballantrae skillfully captures the conflict between the two but runs a bit too long for the non-golf aficionado. There are a few too many random characters running in and out of the plot.
But none of this really slows the reader down. With compelling plot and characters and an authority in depicting worlds at once exotic and familiar, De Maria carries us along on a ride that is thrilling and even cathartic as Jake Scarne battles evil that is not found only in fiction.

Based on what I enjoyed I think the novel should appeal to anyone who like stories that feature some or all of the following: (1) an all-action, virtually indestructible, private investigator who can act a little rashly at times, (2) set primarily in the USA (i.e. in New York, Seattle and Miami), (3) a complex plot involving a wide range of different criminal activities including murder, money laundering & financial fraud, (4) some romance, (5) a large cast of characters, including Ukrainian, Italian and Romanian hoodlums, business entrepreneurs, journalists, lawyers, and police from three different forces and, possibly, (6) an interest in golf.
However, I did not find this a particular quick and easy novel to read. It is quite wordy in places (e.g. as another reviewer has commented, was it necessary to devote quite so many pages to a game of golf?). The plot, while clever, is quite complex and I needed to make a note of all the characters and different threads of the story so I could keep track of what was happening, to whom, when and where. In this regard, it was fortunate that I could devote quite large chunks of time to reading this novel as I may have struggled if I could only read it in short bursts. However, on a positive note, everything is brought together in a very dramatic, and satisfying, climax.
So, overall, 'Sound of Thunder' is an absorbing thriller, full of action and suspense that many readers of the genre should enjoy. It has certainly whetted my appetite to read more novels by Lawrence De Maria.

The book is full of sexy scenes and exciting confrontations, and before long, bodies start piling up. Scarne is the typical hero that you root for. The villains are multi-dimensional which I love because you see why they turned bad and begin to feel for them. Some of them.
I have to admit that I got lost some of the time when the story turned to economics. As an elementary school teacher, this is not my forte. But fortunately, I've seen enough in the news to get a feel for what is going on in the story so I was able to figure it out. The writing is excellent and I appreciate that the author used a lot of familiar "big words". I have a Kindle so all I had to do scroll up and see the definition. Love my Kindle!!
Overall, I thought the book was extremely well-written with many twists and turns. You just can't figure out what is going to happen. Also, I hope that we seen Scarne in the future. I think the author left the door open for more and that's exciting to me. I just wonder what actor the author pictured as Scarne...I'd love to know so I can put a sexy face with a great character.
