Ripping Good Story-Perfect Riviera Maya read!

This is an inventive hero's journey from start to finish. The adventure never lets up, though it is also funny and tender. I found myself immediately invested in my hero, the 16 year-old William. I also loved his salty, middle-aged side-kick Betty, and the Mayan princess (who is beautiful with her pointy jeweled teeth). I read some non-fiction about Mayan culture around the same time, and further admired Pitts' ability to assimilate so many colorful facts into his plot and character details. The battle in the underworld stands out as an example of how the author's research is creatively woven into the story, to immerse us in a Mayan worldview. I read this book in my first vacation days near Tulum and it made the ruins come to life for me. So if you are at all curious about the Mayans, this is a fun, fictional introduction. It seems that some readers object to the main character being a teen, or find the writing style a bit YA. I guess I don't need every novel I read to win the Booker Prize. If you want a delightful, insightful story, full of lasting impressions, you'll enjoy The Serpent Passage. I hope they make a movie of it!

This is an adventurous tale of a young man who travels through time, via the serpent passage and becomes instrumental in saving an ancient civilisation.
It is well paced and a good read but I found the end a little too far fetched for my taste. It is a good adventure story for all ages but not one that stays in the memory for a long time. I read this book a few months ago and can recall snatches of what the book is about, so therefore it stands to reason that this book didn't really have the power to stay in my memory for long enough for it to be a remarkable read.

I bought this book to take with me on a trip in a couple of weeks, but I tried to read the first chapter and could not put it down. I finished it over a weekend before the trip. WOW! What a story. I want to see it as a movie. It was both interesting and informative to become acquainted with the richness of the ancient Maya culture. Todd cleverly wove together the threads of fiction with the twine of nonfiction to create a colorful and fascinating tableau. I will look forward to the next book.

I selected this book to download to my kindle for a vacation trip because of all the great reviews. I read it in the airport etc. It really was not a very good book and could have benefited from a good editor. I think it would appeal mostly to young adolescents, and I gave it 3 stars for that group. It's definitely not at an adult level. If I was buying a book for a child in my life, I would look for something better. I will be much more careful in my evaluation of reviews in the future.

Young Adult Literature at Best

The Serpent Passage by Todd Pitts was one of my first Kindle downloads based on reviews and I learned a serious lesson regarding 5 Star reviews. TSP can best be described, at best, as young adult literature. Nothing wrong with this genre per se, but not for serious adult aficionados of SF/Fantasy.

I found it to be very derivative. Pitt's portrayal of the Mayan legends and culture, complete with the UFO connection and new age paradigms, have been presented in other SF/fantasy works much more effectively decades ago. Nothing new to see here.

I also found his character development and his visual descriptions of the environment (overall narrative) to be very shallow and his writing proved often anti-climatic. For example, (spoilers), the character "Betty" first introduced in the book was really nothing more than a "MacGruffin" used to get the main protagonist into the past and then she basically disappeared from the narrative. Then there was the big battle build up that never happened. The opposing army was literally teleported away "off screen" so to speak before the first spear was hurled. Very disappointing. (I turned the pages alright, but it was to see if I had accidently skipped a few!) I cannot recommend this for adult SF fans.
