When Leigh Benoit returns home to Louisiana for the funeral of her brother and his wife, she becomes increasingly concerned about the welfare of her orphaned niece, Lyla. She is prompted by her grandmother, Clothilde, to move back to take care of her. Leigh has no desire to take on any responsibility, and being home again brings back painful memories. At the funeral, Leigh’s childhood friend, Detective Lucas Castille, tells her the mysterious details of the accident that killed her brother and his wife. Lucas’ young son has dreams of a Dark Man who wishes to harm Lyla. Leigh begins to have similar dreams. She struggles with her rational mind but vows to protect her niece. Soon, she finds out there is more to the story and more to her grandmother than she thought.

I'd have to say, I was a bit iffy when I first purchased the book. The book was amazing and very well put together. All the characters were easy to picture and I felt like I was right there with Leigh, Lucas, Lyla, and all the others. The emotions of this book were so in depth that I felt all of them while reading them.
The only reason I was really iffy about this book was the subject matter. It has a lot of religious background in it and although I am not super religious, it was difficult to decide if the book was right for me. The description of this book that's placed on amazon, got my attention and I had to give it a try. I finished this book in one day and I plan on continuing with the second one soon!

Dieses Buch überzeugt mit seinem Hauptcharakter, Leigh, welche nach langer Zeit nach Hause zurückkehrt, weil es einen Todesfall in der Familie gab. Während sie sich innerlich dagegen wehrt, wieder da zu sein, so folgt sie doch auch einem weiteren Instinkt, nämlich dem, ihre Nichte zu beschützen. Während Albträume sie bei dieser Aufgabe leiten, hilft ihr auch die weltliche Seite in Form eines alten Freundes und Polizisten. Und während sie sich immer noch wehrt, das Übernatürliche an diesen Geschehnissen und ihrer Aufgabe anzuerkennen, nehmen die Ereignisse ihren Lauf.
Dabei ist der Charakter mit seiner inneren Zerissenheit sehr überzeugend. Wie soll man rationales Denken und den Glauben an Legendentum in Einklang bringen? In die Geschichte verpackt sind philosophische Ansätze darüber, was das Leben ausmacht, wie es ist, über Bestimmungen und Schicksal - und die freie Wahl eines jeden Menschen.
Die Charaktere sind liebevoll dargestellt, wobei man vor allem den Hauptcharakter sehr gut kennen lernt, da alles aus seiner Sicht geschrieben ist und man auch konsequent alles nur aus seiner Sicht erfährt. Die verwendeten Mythologien sind teilweise nur kurz angerissen, so wie es eben erforderlich ist, um dem Charakter bei seiner derzeitigen Aufgabe zu helfen und als Leser folgen zu können. Der zweite Teil verspricht eine Vertiefung der Legenden und Mythologien, denn es gibt im Epilog Hinweise darauf, dass der Charakter im zweiten Teil mehr über seine Aufgabe lernen wird. Dennoch kann man dieses Buch auch sehr gut alleine lesen, denn die Geschichte an sich ist so weit abgeschlossen.
Das einzige, was ich beim Ebook als ein wenig störend empfand waren die Umbrüche in der Schriftgröße. Ich bin froh, dass ich am Anfang nicht auf kleinere Schriftanzeige umgestellt habe, denn ab etwa der Hälfte kommen immer wieder Teile, die in kleinerer Schrift präsentiert sind. Das tat meinem Lesevergnügen dennoch keinen Abbruch. Ich kann das Buch wärmstens empfehlen!
