When I started reading The Secret Chapel, I paused at the main character being a priest because I thought "here we go with the church crap" but I kept reading with an open mind and was very pleasantly surprised that the characters in this story came across as real people. The author puts you into the characters minds' so you know what they're thinking - their hopes and their fears. I also loved that every character has a religious belief they strongly identify with but weren't afraid to ask questions and exchange ideas with the other characters. Obviously, God and his supporters are the running theme in this book. However, there are a few other well fleshed-out themes as well such as material wealth, technology, government and family. The Secret Chapel really is well written with a great pace. One last thing: I read some of the 1-star reviews that say that a literal battle between God and the Devil is teen-ish but the Bible is full of similar stories i.e. Job.
If nothing else this book will make you think about a few things. If after you read this book and you love it, don't hesitate to get the next book God's Lions: The House of Acerbi. And no, I don't know or work for John Lyman LOL.

At first we meet the good guys but soon begin wondering where the bad guy is. Then you find out.....it is the ultimate BAD GUY. This story is involved, brilliant, well constructed and all without bad language or explicit violence. It's pure escapism, parts of the narrative defy belief - but if you want reality you buy a non fiction book don't you. Personally I have found this tale to be a marvellous antidote to the cold grey days which we are having to endure at the moment and it doesn't make you fat like chocolate does :-)
There were a few grammatical and spelling errors which are always annoying and break the thread of a rattling good read. I think that they were mainly near the end of the book so perhaps the editor or proof reader were getting tired (or deeply involved in the story). Amazon doesn't give us the option of 4+ stars so 5* it is.
I've already started to read the second book and have just downloaded the third - totally out of character for me but this book was THAT good
