When I got this book I was a little hesitant to read it. The subject matter of abuse is touchy. Then there was a romantic story and the cover threw me off so I didn't know what to expect. Well the author did a wonderful job with it. She stuck with the seriousness of the subject matter and didn't play it off like it wasn't there with a bunch of sex scenes. It was written without overly graphic scenes, just enough to give you an idea of what was happening throughout the story. I felt that Ms. Helle was respectful of the subject matter.

The story surrounds Lauren and her family. From the outside they look like the perfect upper class family, but behind closed doors life was quite different. Lauren father Alex is a domineering man who is more physically abusive towards Lauren's mom and brother Stephen. I think that he doesn't hit Lauren a lot is because she stands up to him. Her world changes when she meets Jessie one night while out with friends. Jessie worked for Lauren's father up until recently. Her father Alex is trying to break them up because Jessie refuses to do what he wants. Alex will even stoop as low as to threaten to get what he wants. Through tragedy and struggles to escape her father's control, Lauren does learn she can have what she didn't think was possible, love.

I enjoyed Lauren's character. No matter what she didn't back down and she went after what she wanted. Her determination was enough to help her mother move on from her father. Jessie is a great guy. When others would have probably left Lauren because of the threats and drama, he stayed by her side and refused to give up.

I wasn't happy with Gina, Lauren's BFF. What she did was wrong. I know that in the end she was just as much a victim as everyone else, but I couldn't have forgiven her.

Ms. Helle did a wonderful job in writing this story. The ending was perfect for it. I look forward to reading more of her work. I definitely recommend it but due to subject matter I suggest it for 18yrs+.

You can recognize a good book by the fact that it grips your attention and doesn't let go, it emerges you in the story, makes you feel invested in it. This book definitely accomplished that. It was brutal, in a good way. The horrors of domestic abuse were painted in an honest clear picture. There is no sugar-coating. The abusing father/husband, Alex Corvington, is portrayed in so much depth, that you come to loathe his character with a passion. The developing relationship between his daughter Lauren and his former employee Jesse is a beautiful contrast to the abuse and brutality that surrounds Alex and tries to engulf everyone that comes close to him. The twists and turns the story offers makes sure you won't put this book down.
It leaves you breathless. And that is exactly what a good book should do.

I really enjoyed reading this book. This is the first Darcia Helle and I doubt it will be the last.

I felt that Darcia really explained her characters and nothing was left to the imagination (a good thing in my book). I prefer a book which is quite steamy and this certainly didn't tick that box however I certainly didn't miss it.

The way the story is told you could believe it is true, I think the way Darcia handles the mothers abusive relationship is fantastic and the way she makes her characters act and react to the situation is true to life.

The relationship between Lauren & Jesse is brilliant, I love everything about these 2 and I was on edge throughout wishing and willing for things to go right for them & I wasn't left dissapointed.

All in All a fantastic book, hero, villain, suspense and love. I loved the whole book and will certainly check out some more of this author's work.

A powerful novel that would have been worth a price but was even more of a good deal as a free Kindle book. Dealing openly and honestly with abuse is never easy, and this author has nailed so much on so many levels. Some have criticized the novel as having childish characters who have no backbone. Others have criticized the character of the dad for being non-creative in his seeming one-dimensional abuse. But for those of us who are in the helping professions and who have dealt with abused spouses and families, these characters, unfortunately, ring true. When persons are systematically de-humanized, when their sense of self-worth is slowly but surely dismantled, there comes a time when they can barely remember when they were whole. As for the dad, when the ego and demand for ultimate control takes over, there IS NO CREATIVITY when it comes to abuse. It is physical and cold and uncaring. The only thing that matters is the abuser's way of thinking and doing and controlling. Thus this novel is full of pain and hurt, of people who want to do the right thing and are not always sure what that is, of tentative forays into the emotional mine field that abuse creates in individuals and families. It is the secret that Lauren kept even from her very best friends, a secret that came back to bite her when one of her best friends was drawn into her father's web of lies. Lauren's dad had personal charisma, charm, good looks, power, wealth, and community esteem. He couldn't let anything his wife or kids might do tarnish any of that. Yet because of his own greed and ambition, he had to deal with a house of cards that he built and that seemed to slowly be coming apart right before his eyes. Yes, there is romance here, and it is the kind that is caring and careful, sensitive and at times will rub robust readers the wrong way. But Jesse was dealing with Lauren, a hurting and insecure woman who needed to re-discover her own strength and he wanted to help her do that. This is a terrific and compelling novel that will stimulate the mind and pull at the emotions. It will not be one that I can easily forget and the author, new to me, is one I will definitely be watching for in the future.

Beautifully written book with lots of twists and intrigue!!!

Loved the characters, they seemed real and not superficial. Loved the relationship between Lauren and Jesse, wasn't over the top and you could related to them.

What a disgusting character Alex was, an ignorant and arrogant man who was a control freak not only as a lawyer corrupting the Chief of Police but also as a husband and father. He was abusive to anyone who crossed him and was the cause of his own son taking his life. He had no respect for his wife and constantly abused her and then would go and sleep with one of the hareem of women that he controlled and was even sleeping with one of Laurens friends.

I am glad that Lauren and Jesse did not surcumb to this man and stood up to him. Respect to his wife for standing up to him and leaving him.

Lovely ending dispite everything this man put the characters through.
