I bought "Traveler" because I bought "Joshua"

I bought this book because "Joshua" the author's first book in this series was so good. I'm a quarter of the way through "Traveler" and I'm saying to myself "Meh" on this one. I'll finish just about any book on principle but this one is not "Joshua". Maybe I'm feeling lazy with this one, and haven't given it enough chance because I was expecting Joshua instead of this brand new story.

Wilson's first book, Joshua, has set up a future that is bleak and unforgiving. In his second book, the bleakness continues with a perspecitive that you hardly ever see in these post-SHTF world books - from the perspective of 'marauders', led by a sociopath who can justify every dispicable thing he does. Lots of lessons to be learned in this book and things to think about. Wilson's writing is fantastic and well thought out. A great book and I highly recommend it/

I loved Joshua, an earlier work by the same author, so as soon as I knew about Traveler I didn't hesitate. I suspect many potential readers will come to this work in the same way. There is much to love about Traveler - but be warned it is not Joshua. For me Joshua resonated with a depth of emotion, and Traveler doesn't quite achieve this. That said it is still an enjoyable read.

Without any spoliers - Traveler provides insight into the justifications that people use for their actions. This is an interesting approach. Novels in the Post - Apocalyptic genre normally examine in-depth the journey of the 'good guys', Traveler also follows the 'bad guys' and the logic that can be employed to justify even the most abysmal actions. This of itself is interesting. In Traveler the main character, James, tries to maintain a thread of humanity in a tapestry of survival, ruthlessness and hardship. That this thread is not broken and becomes stronger as the story unfolds is, at least acoording to this tale, a testament to the power of good. The story shifts about half way through. The later part of the book presents a more positive view of humanity but also demonstrats how quickly this humanity can fall away.

Overall I enjoyed this book. I am a voracious reader of the PA fare, so I have a good share of novels I can compare it with. I'd say Traveller is one of the better PA reads. It is well written, the characters are well drawn and there is enough going on to keep the readers' interest. It probably suffers a bit because most readers will compare it to Joshua - and in such good company it does come up a little short.

Certainly worth buying and I look forward to future work by this author.

I really enjoyed the first book Joshua and sat up all night reading this one after I had finished the 1st. I did prefer Joshua but I liked this one too - makes you think about what we would all do if the government collapsed. Thought provoking. I did think the story would continue from Joshua but this is a stand alone novel set in the same time.
