The first person questioned when local businessman Cody Granger is found dead of a gunshot wound is Tanya Stevens, the hot-tempered redhead who made a big scene just hours earlier when she caught Cody hugging Kate. After that comes Cody’s estranged wife, Laurel, who got a call from Tanya and left town a few hours later.
Daniel O’Reilly, River Valley’s Police Chief, and Kate’s almost-maybe-boyfriend, has a lot to sort out, and steps on some toes (including Kate’s) as he goes about his investigation. Still, when the investigation stalls, it’s Kate he relies on for her insights into local personalities and her knack for coming up with unlikely clues.
Meanwhile, Kate’s best friend Kylie, has another big project under way, and needs Kate’s help as much as Daniel does.

I write mysteries because I like mysteries, and I set them in small towns because that’s the world I know best.

I love creating characters – good ones and bad ones, young and old, lovable and despicable, honest and devious, poor and rich – and I like for them to be real people who have families and pets. If something really interesting happens, the gossip flies. If somebody dies, there’s likely to be a funeral. Some of my people show up for church every Sunday, and some don’t. Some put on a good show but are terrible liars.

And – of course – I like to have at least one perfectly awful murder (sometimes two) in my books, but you’re not likely to see the murder take place.

Finally, I like to tell a good story. I hope you enjoy my books.

Really a nice book. I haven't read the first book in the series, so I'm glad this one didn't rehash the plot of that one. I liked the characters and feel a kinship with Kate, the narrator, in both her avoidance of conflict and in her love of Pride and Prejudice, which I also re-read on a nightly basis. She's smart and funny and self-confident, which is refreshing in a non-official main character in a murder mystery, where often the "heroine" will withhold information, take stupid risks, etc. The feel of a small Georgia town seems just right. There are interesting relationships and events happening along side the mystery, which feel like real life. The pace is perfect for me, too. My only complaints are a few editing issues, the most irritating of which are the uses of the wrong name. In the beginning of chapter 13 Kylie is called Kate, even by Kate herself. There's another spot where Troy goes to visit Troy (instead of Josh) at the newspaper office. Distracting, and things that should have been caught by a proof reader. On the whole I enjoyed the book, I recommend it as a clean, non-violent mystery, and I'll be reading more books by this author.

Kate has returned to the small town of her childhood. She is living in the house she inherited from her grandmother. She is working part time at the weekly newspaper. Best of all she is also able to paint when and what she chooses.

And at times, she helps her friend Kylie. Kylie is a domestic goddess who creates and sells and redoes and is a whirlwind of activity. Kylie is married to a wonderful man, has twin boys and her mother lives with her.

Kate and Kylie have been friends since the third grade. They know one another very well.

Now, Kylie's mother is about to open a cafe. Kylie loves projects and this will be one of the largest. There is painting and sewing to do. There are signs and menus to be done. All in all, Kylie has drafted Kate into helping open the most wonderful cafe in town.

During the Flood Festival, Cody Granger is found shot to death. He is a wealthy man who grew up in town. His family is one of the wealthiest. Cody himself was in the process of divorcing his wife because he found it difficult to be faithful and his wife found it difficult to accept his behavior.

Kate's sort of maybe boyfriend is Daniel the police chief. She helped him with a case in the past and he trusts her judgment. Daniel is new to town and Kate is familiar with families and town history. She finds it easy to understand relationships based on town history. Kate and Daniel work well as a team.

Cody's murder seems to have no motive. His womanizing was well known in town, so it is doubtful some jealous person killed him. Everyone who may have wanted him dead has an alibi.

But, slowly things unfold and as they do, it is evident things are not exactly as they appear.

This is the second in a series, but it works perfectly fine on its own.

Ms Moore has created a well developed plot and very likable characters. There is humor along with the mystery. The reader is carried along at a good pace with no slow spots in the story.

I enjoyed this book very much. If you are a cozy mystery fan, this is a book you will enjoy.

The second book in this new mystery series by Charlotte Moore is even better than the first! In the midst of preparations for Christmas, I decided to gift myself with the latest book, and I had to read straight through because the plot continues to twist and turn. The author is clearly familiar with small southern towns, and this knowledge brings depth to her characters. You have a wide range of likely suspects, but you might be surprised when an arrest is finally made. The setting is July, but you might become a bit suspicious of your own family as you gather for the holidays. I am already looking forward to book 3! So gift yourself or someone else with this great series. No wrapping required!

The second book in the Kate & Kylie mystery series is a fantastic read! The main protagonist, Kate, is someone I could totally relate to especially when it came to her avoidance of conflict. She's back home in rural Georgia to start her life over and she's smart, funny and a loyal friend. I love that her BFF, Kylie, drags her to all the garage and consignment sales so that they can outfit the new restaurant Kylie's mom is opening. One of my absolute favorite things is the relationship that Kate has with her law enforcement boyfriend(?), Daniel. He's not afraid to enlist Kate and her sleuthing abilities to catch the culprit which is so not the case in a lot of books. I do hope that Ms. Moore will continue with their story!

I liked this book, but I can't say I loved it. There are too many typographical errors in it. Some of the times the names were wrong and that was confusing. It was still a good mystery. It had a good surprise ending. I still recommend it to anyone who likes to read a good clean cozy mystery.
