A great mystery and a fabulous read

“The Quail Runner” warmed itself into this reader at a measured speed, not too slow, not too fast, like the rhythms of the New Mexico pueblos and people at its heart. There is a crime, or crimes, of course, and as discovery unravels, we fall into the cadence of Dennis Kaatsay, a local reporter with a personal connection to the victims and their families. Possibly to the murderer. The pacing is assured, every new introduction an opening into a rich world; with every conversation, a new hint to take us closer to the truth. Through him we get to know a set of characters rooted in the earth and the history of the area, from pre-Columbian indigenous populations, through the invading Spaniards, through today. History comes alive—I particularly love this!—but it does not overpower. On the contrary, we understand the characters and their place in society better. Their personal stories have the texture of real lives. I enjoyed the hero, the victims and all the sidekicks. Everyone’s role in the cast is well defined. The resolution inevitable. Dennis—thoughtful, deliberate, private, involved, possibly in love—deserves his own series. I have no idea whether Buddy Mapel is already writing book number two. If not, I would highly encourage it. I loved the first one. Can't wait to see what's next.

The story and plot are good, but most of all, the love of the people and the land is what makes this book really interesting. The painting of the landscape takes one right there and the fine character descriptions bring the people to life. I have come to love the area and its inhabitants and would like to return there, meet some of the people again.

A little mystery, a little history

I had a little trouble when I began this book deciding whether it was a mystery or a history text. Mapel incorporates quite a lot of history in the first half. The protagonist is a reporter, and the book follows his search for the truth behind the hanging of two young boys. Also part of the story are another young boy who committed suicide by hanging and the beating death of a teacher. The book does come to a semi-satisfactory ending, and I've no doubt it follows faithfully the process involved in researching a story. However, it is simply not very interesting.

I usually read classic, old-fashioned mystery novels but felt like a change so I went for this one because the title intrigued me. I just loved it - the world the author has created is absorbing and the characters are believable, likable and intriguing. I couldn't put it down. I was absorbed in the atmosphere and completely surprised by the ending. I love the puzzle of a mystery but I also want a world to get lost in, and The Quail Runner delivers that in spades. There's tons of fascinating information about Native American culture and history, all woven seamlessly into the narrative. This is a great novel for book groups - lots of discussion points - but most of all, it's a great read. I look forward to the next book by this author.

Loved this book. It creates a wonderful sense of time and place. The characters are very realistic and we quickly grow to care about them. The descriptions of this part of the country, one of my favorite parts of the desert southwest, are evocative and haunting. The only thing that keeps this from being a five star book is a little too much extraneous detail, but I completely understand the author's desire to illuminate the story in a way that brings it realistically to life for the reader. Being a big fan of Southwestern mystery writers I was looking forward to reading Buddy Mapel's debut novel featuring Dennis Kaatsay, a journalist living in northern New Mexico. When three young boys are founding hanging in a tree and a beloved teacher is murdered Dennis decides to take on "the project" of solving the mystery of their deaths. His methodology is to interview one person after another to the point of total boredom with nothing much happening throughout the book. Also, the dialogue and conversations are ridiculous and their are no real clues or hooks to grab hold of the reader. The plot, such as is, does nothing to create excitement or interest by the reader. The protagonist is just flat out boring!

Also, most Southwest mystery writers try to instill a sense of atmosphere, which I really enjoy, but this is totally lacking in this novel. The story could have taken place anywhere. If you are looking for insight into Indian culture or mysticism you will not find that here either other than a brief discussion of the ancient history of the pueblos that once existed of which two remain to this day. I definitely will not be reading any other books by this author. There are to many good Southwestern mystery writers out there to waste time on this author!
