The characters are believable and the reader is soon caught up in their struggle with the Grid action of buying and selling of human resources as products! I look forward to picking up where I left off with Volume Two!

At first I wasn't sure that I wanted to finish this, but the more I read, the more I wanted to read! Evita is quite a character, and Martin is loveable. I want to see him grow as a character in the sequels, and I am definitely looking forward to the next book. I have to find out how Evita gets out of the situation she was left in!

The Dream Merchants is an interesting, financial based science fiction tale set in the not too distant future. Using a thought-provoking concept of individuals as vehicles for investment based upon their potential as future employees and income expectations, Chris Strausz-Clark has created a curious world where the drafting of individuals is as high stakes as the pro sports drafts of today. There is a strong thread of financial technical jargon which will provide another layer of enjoyment for the financially informed reader but can become distracting for someone uninitiated in the topic. The narrative is slow to come together but sufficiently curious to draw the reader forward, recognizing a slow trap is closing on the protagonist.
