James A. West is the bestselling author of the epic fantasy series Heirs of the Fallen, and the heroic fantasy series Songs of the Scorpion. Between gritty quests, he recently decided to dip a toe into the primordial sludge from whence he sprang, and began working on Beasts of the Field, the first novel of a dystopian thriller series. James is a native of the Pacific Northwest, but life is a road of many turns. He served in the US Army, spent a year as a long-haul truck driver with his wife (who also happens to be his high-school sweetheart), and attended the University of Montana. I really enjoyed this story, I became entranced with it more than the first book in the series "The God King." I think the characters were more relatable and better fleshed out in this story than they were in "The God King." I felt more emotion and saw more detail put into the aspirations of the main character Leitos as well. I liked the ravaged world and the creepy desperate towns. I loved that some characters appeared more than human and wondered about the creatures. I think this book had a gritty quality that was absolutely delectable. Throughout much of the book I could see clues eluding to something that did not particularly add up in the story but could not guess it until it slapped me in the face (in a manner of speaking) at the end. It was definitely a wild ride worth doing again. I have already purchased the rest of the series and look forward to reading more of James West in future.

A slave from birth and then a chance for freedom, just don't stop running. While a nice tale of trusts and betrayals set in the post apocalyptic world caused by the unleashing of the Powers of Creation it had no other connection to the previous book until the last chapters when the connections were all drawn at one as a pretty little package. To me that just cheapened the entire story line. It would have been more enjoyable to have the truth revealed in bits along the story line.

This novel takes place 200 years after the conclusion of the first novel. A slave revolt is in the happening. A slave escapes with the orders to grow strong and cruel in order to avenge his people. His escape is harrowing, due to demons chasing him. Eluding them, he is captured by Hunters, and is on his way back to captivity.

He is 'rescued' with the help of another Hunter, who says she knows who he is and where he needs to go.

Who is this escaped slave, and why is he so important that so many people are out to capture him.

Another awesome novel by Mr West. I did not expect or see the ending that was presented to the reader. I must say, I liked it.

This novel does not need the first one in order for you to enjoy or understand. Great plot, and great characters.

As the 2nd book in the series, I really thought this book would be better than it was. Though I did finally read the entire book, it took me almost 2 months. I had a hard time putting the first book down, but this one was hard to get into. I'm not even sure I want to read any further into the series knowing how hard this one was to finish.

I enjoyed the first book in this series and was not disappointed in this one, even though I was a little reluctant to try it considering it picks up several generations later than the first book. Great pacing, good character development. Definitely a page turner.

My only complaint, once again, is the errors in grammar. I guess proofreading is a lost art which is unfortunate because it disrupts what is otherwise a great read. It's not just Mr. West's books either, it seems to be an industry-wide problem.

Don't let that dissuade you from this series though. Mr. West is an excellent storyteller.

This book was a different than what I expected but I like the way Mr. West continued the story.
