Rose Hill (Rose Hill Mystery Series Book 1) Kindle Edition
When rich and rotten Theo Eldridge is found bludgeoned to death in the local veterinary clinic, Rose Hill police chief Scott Gordon is forced to work with ambitious county investigator Sarah Albright. Unfortunately, Sarah seems more interested in seducing Scott than in solving the crime.
Scott’s crazy about Maggie Fitzpatrick, but she's still grieving over the mysterious disappearance of the love of her life. Although determined to resist the powerful chemistry between them, Maggie finds herself deeply involved with Scott's investigation, and battling emotions she can no longer deny.
It’s a bitterly cold January in Rose Hill. As Scott and Maggie untangle the sticky web of Theo's shady business dealings, they uncover dark secrets that may connect Theo's murder to another committed twenty years before.
If you like cozy mysteries with a little romance and humor, you will love the Rose Hill Mystery Series.

About the author

Pamela grew up in West Virginia, where she always had her nose in a book, and over the years found that she loved to write. In 2007 she started her own book and decided to make it a mystery. The Rose Hill Mystery Series has 12 books, and the Cozy Mountain Mystery Series has 6.
Pamela's books are all set in West Virginia. The covers feature her favorite flowers, and many of the character names are inspired by the Irish, Scottish, Italian, Greek, Lebanese, Jewish, Hungarian, German, and Polish names of the friends and neighbors she remembers from her childhood.
Although cozy mystery is her genre, her books also delve into romantic relationships, family, children, small town life, and steadfast friendships.

Sarah is a detective and has the resources he needs to solve the case. Unfortunately Sarah is determined to make him do the dirty work, which wouldn't bother him much if anyone in the town actually cared about Theo's murder, but the people in town are ecstatic Theo's dead. And have some of their own dirty secrets to keep. To make matters worse Sarah's more interested in getting Scott between the sheets than solving the murder.
Scott, on the other hand, only has eyes for Maggie. He just can't get Maggie to give him the time of day.
Scott hates gossip. But he does get closer to his goal with Maggie as he opens himself up to the gossip around town, and it's a small town, in order to solve the crime.
Along with the "anybody could be the killer" aspect this book is a fun read. Rose Hill had me laughing out loud, and I can so relate to the small town gossip mill.
First the bad:
1) Lots of loose ends (which I assume will be addressed later in the series), so if you go into this expecting a neatly packaged ending where every question is answered, you're going to be disappointed. 2) Like a lot of reviewers, I found the cast of characters a little too sprawling for my tastes. I felt like I needed a flowchart with notes so I could keep up with everyone's background and how they were related to everyone else--maybe a cast of characters at the beginning would be helpful? 3) Lots of the characters (mostly the tangential ones) are rather one-dimensional: The town bully who's too rich and powerful for anyone to stand up to him (apparently a ripoff of Biff Tannen from Back to the Future II), the elderly lady who comes into the coffee store and does nothing but complain, the rich heiress who treats everyone around her like dirt, the fawning mother who's decided that no one's good enough for her "little baby," the slutty female investigator who's utterly shameless in her pursuit of virtually every male she sees, etc. Possibly the reason for this is found in #2: When you have that many characters, you can't really give most of them any depth. 4) I keep reading in the blurb and reviews how this book/series is supposed to be funny, but found the author's attempts at humor to be "meh." 5) The identity of the murderer really wasn't that much of a shocker, although I can't claim I picked that person as the killer or anything. 6) Along with other reviewers, I found the slow pace to be really off-putting at times. It seemed like the author was trying to get you to catch the small town vibe where everyone does things at a slower pace, but it came across as meandering at times.
The good:
The MAIN characters (as opposed to the secondary ones) were more well-rounded. The protagonist's personal struggles between his duties as head LEO and as a friend, a would-be boyfriend, and a member of a tight-knit community (all of which are pulling him in opposite directions) were pretty riveting. The lady he'd like to be romantically involved with but who resists her attraction to him was pretty interesting. I also found interesting the author's picture of a small-town community. Often we city folk have one-dimensional views of life in a small town: They're either filled with bigots and horrible people, or they're saints who'd offer a stranger the shirt off their backs. Well, guess what! You're going to find in a small town the same array of good and decent people along with some jerks and cowards and horrible people. The main difference apparently is that in a small town everyone knows everyone else's business and it's a lot harder to keep your secrets private.
In summary, I felt a little cheated re: the murder mystery, but the soap opera elements successfully held my interest until the end. It's good enough that I'll probably read the 2nd one, but if I don't see some improvement, I'll probably stop after that one.
Scott is the policeman who is trying to figure out who the killer is but isn't really great at it because he's just a good guy. Then there's Maggie who Scott is in love with but she's still not sure what she's wants even though sure loves Scott. Scott gets Maggie to help him try to solve this killing.
Instead of telling pieces of this story, please just read it. You won't regret it and it is worth the read. Loved it!!!
At first the Sheriff's Department investigator, Sarah, an extremely predatory female with Scott, the Chief of Police, her intended prey, takes over the case. But, when she finds that it may end up being more work than she is willing to do she assigns all the leg work to Scott with the full intention of taking all the credit.
So, it becomes Scott's job to solve the case. Problem is, everyone in town, it seems, had a really good motive for wanting Theo dead. Some of the motives go back to their childhood days. And each one better than the last.
When it is uncovered that Theo was blackmailing some very powerful people along with people of little to no power, the Federal government gets called in.
Just like any small town, everyone thinks that they know everyone's business but they rarely do.
This story is loaded with characters and several plot twists. You have to pay close attention because it can get away from you.

Each character becomes an interesting part of the mystery.
I would have liked it never to have ended. There were so many stories to continue.

It fits firmly into the small town "cozy mystery" genre, with a sprinkle of romance thrown in, so should be viewed as light entertainment.
Well written but with characters that didn't seem quite fully developed. However this is the first novel in what looks to be a long series so I hope the characters have received some extra input along the way.
The plot was interesting but unfortunately I picked the culprit a long way from the end. Nevertheless an entertaining read in the genre that could perhaps have been tweaked a little by being condensed.
