I was literally thrown out of my dream this morning by an earthquake. The earthquake was not real, just in my dream, but it threw me violently out of my dream and I am pretty sure I jumped a few feet up off the bed, arms flailing around. My brain was pretty darn rude to do that to me. Now I am feeling a little jumpy this morning.

Trail of Thread: A Woman’s Westward Journey, Historical Letters 1854-1855

Taste the dust of the road and feel the wind in your face as you travel with a Kentucky family by wagon train to the new territory of Kansas in 1854.

Find out what it was like for the thousands of families who made the cross-country journey into the unknown.

In this first book of the Trail of Thread series; in the form of letters she wrote on the journey, Deborah Pieratt describes the scenery, the everyday events on the trail, and the task of taking care of her family. Stories of humor and despair, along with her ongoing remarks about camping, cooking, and quilting on the wagon trail make you feel as if you pulled up stakes and are traveling with the Pieratt’s, too.

But hints of the brewing trouble ahead plagued them along the way as people questions their motive for settling in the new territory. If they are from the South, why don’t they have slaves with them? Would the Pieratt’s vote for or against legal slavery in the new state? Though Deborah does not realize it, her letters show how this trip affected her family for generations to come.

This series is based on author Linda K. Hubalek’s ancestors that traveled from Kentucky to Kansas in 1854. Twelve old quilt patterns are mentioned in the letters, and the sketched designs are in the back of the book for reference.

Four years have passed since Rebecca’s first summer in Jackson, Wyoming. Her decision to settle on the Flying W was not without sacrifice, but she can’t imagine being any happier than she is right now. Her husband, Alec, provides her with everything she could ever want – namely, the love and respect she’s yearned for all her life. She’s never had a reason to feel insecure in their marriage. Then a beautiful stranger arrives in town, a woman with strong ties to the Westins… and a long history with Alec.

Alec has never been the type of man to talk about himself. He’s always felt that most things are better left in the past. But when he comes face to face with that past – and a decision that’s haunted him for nearly a decade – he knows it’s time to share the details with his wife. As he slowly reveals his story, Rebecca realizes just how much she doesn’t know about her husband. And as they each struggle to bridge the gap between past and present, they fail to notice a much quieter tragedy that’s taking place right under their own roof…
