My oldest basset had his football game yesterday instead of the usual Sunday game. It’s very weird to know we have the whole day to ourselves. No games, no commitments, just a day to relax. But I can’t. I have been shuffling around the house taking care of all the little things that have been on my brain. I vowed not to do anything Candyland related, but I see that ending soon. Yet I still feel a bit of freedom and I am enjoying it. I might just get a little crazy and try and read a book. Oh the insanity!!

Genre: Horror | Fantasy

A collection of four extraordinary stories, not one of which travels a predictable route.

On a weekend jaunt with her parents, a 15-year-old girl shoplifts from the wrong souvenir shop. The consequences aren’t immediate, but a disconcerted Frankie Spitz soon discovers how overpowering an unexpected punishment can be.

Marleen lives an isolated existence except for work and her best friend. “Little Sister” follows a day in Marleen’s life, as revelations surface and things that seemed obvious at the start begin to blur.

A glimmer appears in the center of a boy’s bedroom, not quite a ghost, not quite Anything that Tommy can name. Except that he knows it’s a girl, and that she’s trying her best to communicate with him. In “Catching Lisette”, Tommy chases explanations for his phantom visitor, never anticipating the beguiling answers to his questions.

The fourth tale in this 22,000-word collection is “Photo Finish.” Rosalie Turner’s about to field the biggest curveball life’s ever thrown at her! Mysterious strangers are showing up in her photographs; are the reasons for this rooted in her past? In the Bad Thing that Rosalie never meant to do 19 years before? Or is there a simpler explanation? Rosalie, along with her daughter Jenna, tries to massage clarity out of an enigma, and ends up exploring not only her past, but also her present life. Events conspire to overtake her speculations, though, and Rosalie ends up understanding all too much.

A fabulous read with well-drawn characters and plots. These are four thrilling stories!

Something Blue

4.5 Stars (15 Reviews)
Genre: Women’s Fiction | Contemporary Fiction | Humor & Satire

FREE for a limited time

Southern-fried Chick Lit — funny, true and heart-warming — about three generations of Southern women trying to survive a wedding without bloodshed, if not emotional trauma. It’s “Bridget Jones” meets “Steel Magnolias.”

Granny Lila is trying to keep her romp with the widow next door a secret; as she tells one of her granddaughters, “Your momma don’t want me to have a dog, what do you think she’d say about a boyfriend?”

Lila’s daughter, Barby, runs the best beauty shop in town. Four days before the wedding, she gets a letter from Mattel threatening to sue her for copyright infringement. Barby knows three things: that she was named B-A-R-B-Y ten whole years before Mattel introduced their little plastic bimbo; that her former boss and main competitor in town, Gladys Moreland, is the one who set her up; and that she picked the wrong week to quit smoking.

Oldest daughter Scarlett is the over-stressed soccer mom to two rambunctious boys. Scarlett just can’t understand why no one in her family understands how hard she’s working to make her little sister’s wedding absolutely perfect.

Bride-to-be Ellen is the sweet if scatterbrained baby of the family. She’s nervous about facing the invasion of her Yankees in-laws, including a mother-in-law who’s allergic to everything and a lecherous father-in-law going through a mid-life crisis.

Middle-daughter Kate is the one who fled the small hometown for the big city. Now, her boyfriend has left her, the tattoo on her shoulder isn’t hidden (as she’d hoped) by the hideous bridesmaid dress, and her mother is making her go to Wednesday night supper at the church she hasn’t voluntarily set foot in for nearly ten years. She’s desperately hoping that five little blue tablets of Valium will keep her sane at least until they cut the wedding cake.
